    Indexable End Mill Question

I'm looking at buying a insert end mill. Am I correct in surmising that I can mill a pocket/profile as deep as the L2 dimension? (not in one pass obviously)

Sure you can do it but with a good jet of compressed air to clear chips from the slot.

You can even do ramping with this, just verify with the company what is the maximal angle it can plunge in your material.

Are you considering buying that same particular Kennametal M1 milling cutter? If so, are you machining only aluminum? That's what the cutter is made for, good choice if that's your application.

And to answer your question: Yes. I have used insert shoulder mills like that in the manner you describe for years, and as long as you have (as jeffrey01 said) good chip evacuation you'll be fine.
