    Hello ,
If I bought the Gecko G540 what else would I need?
The G540 already has the stepper motor drivers in it , correct?
    Thanks

I bought a Gecko G540 with motors, power supply, and cables from CNCRouterParts.com. They installed and adjusted the appropriate resisters. I just plugged eveything in and it worked! Seemed like a fair price to me but YMMV.

    Don

I still have to put everything in a box, add a fan, install limit switches, and add relays to power spindle, etc.

Not as plug and play. From cncrouter parts its a complete kit. No wiring, no soldering. Connectors are prewired. Worth the couple extra $.

    Find them here

It is just not that hard to set up. No reason to pay someone else if you dont have to. The knowledge you will gain is valuable. Try it and pose your questions here. You will get help. Or you could buy a turnkey system and wonder why it doesnt move.

You are not comparing apples to apples. The Kelinginc kit does not include the motor cables. Also the cncrouterparts powersully is a name brand powersupply. (MEAN WELL) I know cause I have two of the kits. They are smaller quiter and more reliable than many of the no name powersupplis sold on that site.

I have an EE so believe me I know how to wire these. Its that most woodworkers building cnc routers dont want to muck around building cables.

It's not that easy to get the cables right. Getting cncrouterparts cables solves a whole bunch of problems. It's the right gauge (although more copper would be better), the right shielding and has the right strain reliefs, plus of course the right resistor value. The soldering is good, and the length is appropriate.

It doesn't look like Gerry was responding to you--he was responding to the OPs question about it being on sale. Gerry's point was he could get it for less than the temporary sale price any time at Keling.

Dude it does not matter that you can get it cheaper. Its not the same thing. You can compare prices on two things is they are not the same.

On top of that you still have to purchase your cables and thats going to cost you. I can also price things out on ebay and save money but its not the same.

I grant thaty you can get things cheaper elsewhere but by the timw you purchase the cables and take into account the powersupply difference. Its not that much more to get a real plug and play electric kit.

I bought a G540 from keling about a year ago when I built mine. About a buck's worth of resistors, a $50 spool of cable and two hours with a soldering iron (using the connectors INCLUDED with the G540) and my machine came to life.

Prewired cables are nice, but highly unnecessary. If you can't wire four leads and a resistor to a motor, you probably can't figure out how to create toolpaths, run CAM software, etc.

You can do no wrong with the G540 in my experience... and it's well worth the money, on sale or not.

    Am I confused?

I didn't see anyone questioning the value of the CNC router parts kit...

The original comparison was between a barebones G540 on sale, compared to a barebones G540 at kelinginc? right?

    Correct.

The question was "Should I buy a G540 directly from Gecko while it's on sale?"

The answer was "No, they're cheaper at Keling all the time".

Try to follow along. The OP talked about a sale on just the Gecko G540. Gerry pointed out that Keling has just the G540 cheaper 24-7-365. You want to make another point, fine, but quit saying Gerry's comparing apples and oranges, when quite clearly he is not. Your point that getting it all together with the cables, resistors, etc., is understood--that's how I did it. Nobody's ignoring you or misunderstanding you, if that's what you're worried about.

ACtuaaly the thread moved into kits not just to the G540. The difference in price for just the G540 between just about any site is only a couple $ as Gecko sets the the retail price.

Winter hasn't even started. Cabin fever already?

    On the deviated thread...

Yes, no, maybe. Mean Well Is a good name and if you price them on eBay, they rank twice or more $$ than the Chinese counter parts. I screwed up my cables the first time (one solder joint at a cable/motor wire splice, one shorted resister), but that's just my disability and lack of manual dexterity. I got my G540 at the dawn of the product, and there were no ready made cables. While I eventually got them right, ready made cables takes an extra bit of hassle out of the equation. Without getting into who has better, if you can piece it together here and there AND buy cables too, ready made ROCK! LOL

How good is the G540? I didn't fry it with the set resister and intermittent contact problems. THAT says a LOT about it no matter where you buy.
