    chasing threads

    Hello,
I got 2 pcs. built for and assembly i'm building...

The first piece is a stainless threaded rod.
The second is a brass threaded fitting.

(both pieces have a custom thread, aka I can't buy a tap and chase them)

I press the brass fitting into an aluminum plate and the threaded rod goes through.

The problem I am having is that when I press the brass fitting into the aluminum plate, the end of it is squeezing together and not allowing my rod to thread through it.

I am using a .002 press fit, I don't think i can get too much looser or the fitting will spin in the aluminum...

Does anybody have any tips on how to fix this?

    Thank You
    Ryan Schmidt

Make your own tap and chase the threads.

What make you so sure you can't buy a tap? You'd be shocked at what is out there if you know where to look. Just what thread is it that you have?

    Agreed.

Unless you're working on an alien spacecraft that crash landed in your backyard, you'll definitely be able to find the tap for that. Start by getting a tread gauge set and see what the thread is. =)
