Hi Rusty,
I could make use of a good telescope out here in the boonies. I have a good view of the sky when I turn off the outside lights.

Hi Gerry,
Yes, a house swap at the same location. Winter rains and cold weather slowed down progress due to ground being too soft on some days prior to towing the old one out and towing the new one in. Some radio controlled crawler machines were used to move the halves while the tow truck stayed off of my site.

Sounds good Arbo,
I was following this and the Vectric site from my smart phone but didn't post anything due to it being too awkward on a small screen device. I'll be attending the McGrew Woodworks Aspire Camp in Columbia, SC in May.

This site is full of ideas. That's where all of mine were hatched ... Check out the CNC Router Parts website for kits and/or parts to build your own. If you can weld and cut steel, go with steel box tube from a commercial source like I did.

Wood neophyte.
CNC Router Parts I am looking at around 9K.

A 4' x 8' machine will not be very low cost unless you can do most of the labor yourself. That has been key for for me, since I already had the lathe and milling machine, welder, metal cutting band saw, and could make most of the parts for the frame myself using box tubing from a nearby commercial steel supplier. . I would consider $9k pretty reasonable since you only have to do the assembly of a kit from CNCRP. I paid $1k just for the paint job on my big machine, and that was just for paint supplies and rental of an automotive paint booth and lift back truck. A friend and I did all of the work at no cost to me.

I think that for $9K, it is worth putting a little more thought into the linear motion components, especially the rails and slides. Don't just think about the router from a parts perspective, try to think about it 'in total", parts, assembly, alignment, and keeping it aligned. Sometimes just modestly more expensive parts can be dramatically easier to align.
I am also looking at the offerings from China.

I would also look at pacific bearing (PBC). Some of their simo products are pretty interesting.
