Question software for 64-bit operating system

I was just wondering if anyone knows of any CNC software that runs on a 64-bit operating system. It does not have to do much as I am just getting into stepper motor control. I suppose I will probably need to either use a different machine or write some software myself. Just thought I would ask though as most of the software I have looked at requires a 32-bit OS.

BobCAD runs fine. It is 32-bit software, but runs on Win7 64-bit just fine.

Most 32-bit software will run on 64-bit operating system. In fact, I don't know of any 32-bit software that won't run on a 64-bit OS.

I'm running Mach 3 on 64-bit windows 7. I'm also running Aspire, which is 32-bit, on the same OS.

That is kind of what I thought, but several of the software packages specifically said only to use it on 32-bit operating systems and it would not work otherwise.

As for Mach 3, that was a bit disappointing for me. I installed in on my 32-bit Windows XP Pro and it crashed my system with a B.O.D. so I removed it and am now using KCAM4 which is not bad though I have not yet really used it much as I am still new to this type of software and I have not yet put a system together as yet.

    Thanks for the info!

While Mach3 will run on a 64bit OS, the parallel port driver will not work. So, if you want to use Mach3 on a 64 bit OS, you need to use an external motion control device like a SMoothstepper.

A Smoothstepper should let you run Mach3 on your 32 bit system as well, as more than likely, it's the parallel port driver causing the BSOD. JUst install Mach3 without it and it should run fine.

Okay thanks, good to know. I thought the parallel port driver was needed in NT operating systems because of the security permissions. So, you are talking about going through USB instead of the parallel port as in this link
