Hello folks,

My first message here. I got ZAY7032G for the price I could not resist. I would like to convert it into CNC, but the round column is a problem (the quill won't give me enough movement).

Question: to get rid of the head losing vertical position why wouldn't it be possible to make a guide rack out of linear slide and mount it on a column instead of the existing gear rack. After that take the crank mechanism out of the cast milling head holder and attach pillow blocks.

It should not be a problem to mount a ballscrew for Z axis.

We have retrofit "CNC'ed" several round column mills.

Your idea is similar to what we have done in the past however we add additional slots to the head casting for linear rail and left the rack in place.
