You can home without home switches, just click Ref All button, and it will set your home position wherever the machine is at that time.

Before I had home switches, I would jog my machine against it's hard stops, and Ref All there, so I had a repeatable home position.

Softlimits positions are set in Config > Homing/Limits, and toggled on and off with the Softlimits button on the run screen.

I try to send all 3 axis home before I close the program, but in the event I need to home from scratch I do the following....

Manually move each axis to it's hard stop
    Start Mach3 and the controller
Set the jog mode to step and .1000 for stepping distance
Now I jog each axis twice and this will set it off the hard stops by .2
Then close and restart Mach3 and Ref All
