Servo driven turn-key linear stage? What's available?

    Hi all,

I'm looking for a turnkey linear stage with the following specs -

    1. driven by a servo with feedback. (could be a stepper, but I need PID)
    2. ~12" of travel (this is negotiable)
    3. potentially has an integrated driver (or will work with a G320)
    4. ballscrews, not leadscrews.

I've scoured eBay and the classifieds here trying to get a sense of what is available, and there seems to be a weird gap between the DIY stuff and the "made for laboratories" stuff. Much of the "made for laboratories" stuff seems to require proprietary drivers and cost a fortune, and the DIY stuff is, by definition, not exactly turnkey. I'd be happy to assemble from a kit, but don't want to be machining parts myself if I don't have to.

I'm thinking in the $300-$700 range, am I way off? What am I missing here? Thanks for any insight.

    force (thrust) required?
    speed required?
explain why you want servo instead of $ 12 dc motor?
    any size restraints?

Add these tidbits and I can show you what thomson has.

    http://kollmorgen.com/en-us/misc/linear_positioners/

w/o servo or ballscrew they typically run from $ 300 to $ 5,000.00. w/servo (no drive) and ballscrew typically $ 1500 to 10,000.00............ but give rest of the info above and we will look!
