    A bit of turning advice

    Hi Folks

I need to machine a shoulder on a chuck back-plate to fit a new 4 jaw I've bought. I don't trust the measuring equipment I've got to the degree of accuracy I want and so I'll have many trial-and-error skims in order to get the required fit.

What is the best type of turning insert to use for such light cuts?

    Thanks
    Rob

Something sharp. Probably get away with something polished and meant for non-ferrous metals, or just grind up a sharp HSS bit.

Also, if it's an independant 4 jaw chuck, you don't really need that much accuracy, unless you're planning on removing the chuck with some item precisely held in it, and reinstalling it later with the same item still in it.

Proper way to do this, would be to machine up a precise dummy spindle nose, then use it for testing the fit of the mating part. The idea being, that you'll be using the same item to measure the actual spindle, as you will the dummy, so the dummy should end up the same size...
