Ofcourse its for real, its something close to a rotory broach but a differenet way of doing it.

In the slow motion vids you can see the action it uses to accomplish the task. Pretty cool really and I am not 100% sure how they get it to do like that but its clear to see its doing it.

Whats odd it appears its more than just a new tool, like somehow part of the action is built into the spindle thats running it. I guess we will see more of it in time if it proves to hold up & be cost effective.

Technically possible. Note complex gearbox up top. Suitable for aluminium etc, but I would want to rely on it lasting a long time on hard steel. High wear rate.

The operating principle has been known for years and I guess I saw my first example at least thirty years ago. The hole is not perfectly square there are small radii in the corners.
An open mind is a virtue...so long as all the common sense has not leaked out.

This type of thing has been around for quit a while. If i remember correctly it involves two slotted plates mounted horizontally together on a spindle or arbor in a manner that allows the two plates to move in a manner allowing the the cutting tool to move in the way as seen in the video. Each plate has two slots that are parallel and set towards the outer edge and the plates are mounted at 90 degrees to one another. This type of thing was normally mounted in a drill press and was quite common in work shops.

Huh - even I can do that!

    Drilling non-round holes is easy!
I can drill triangular holes with an ordinary twist drill ...

    Cheers

PS: it's actually just about the same technique too !
