Mill Drill Z axis Counter Weight

    Hello all,
Been putting this off for a while now. I need a little advise on where to anchor the Z axis counter weight to the Z axis. Counter weight will be aprox 125 to 135 lbs. Machine is a RF45 type mill drill that i designed the Z axis. Here is some jpgs of my CAD design.

Not sure if i should anchor just behind the spindle head(bridgeport type), or right in front of linear ways.

    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Troy

Is a counterweight necessary? You should be able to put a stepper/servo motor on there with the right pulley reduction so that a counter weight is not necessary.

Also, if your set on the counterweight setup, take a look into gas springs. Much easier to retrofit and look nicer too.

I have no problems with the stepper handling the load. The reason for counter weight on my setup, is to take a lot of stress off of linear rails, ball screw, etc. Plus it helps in taking out some vibration when cutting.

I have looked at the gas spring setup, but prefer the weight setup.Plus no brackets or nothing would be in my work envelope of machine.

    Thanks,
    Troy
