I need to create a VERY coarse thread pitch thread in a 1/16" ID. If I could get 1 thread per inch (for example) that would be great. Think of it as an ID version of an auger. Is there any way to do this aside from custom tooling?

depends on your material you are cutting how and how long and how deep the goove/thread. there are many ways to do it, however everything is going to have to be custom UNLESS, you have a old cnc machine and want to do a controlled Crash
Sounds more like rifling than threading. Maybe talk to a gunsmith.

normal rifling only goes down to .177 ie 17 cal. I think someone did a 15cal. a while back.
he could make a guide and have the tool slip in the id of that guide with a pin sticking out "cheap broach"
I wish these guys would answer post when they post a question, or at the very least add in important details like material type length etc etc. big difference between alum and inco as well as a 30" part and a 3/8" long part.

Actually it would be very similar to rifling except that it would need to be a sharp thread like a screw.
The length of the ID would only be 1" long, just one thread spiral preferably, in 303 or 304 stainless. It would be a through hole so I wouldn't have to worry about chip removal.
Are you serious on the 1/16" ID?
Is that 1/16" on the minor dia. or the major dia.?
A single start thread that small is closer to a straight groove than a thread.
In 304 casting is probably the only way other than EDM due to forces involved in cutting.
What's the application? You might want to consider a straight groove and then actually twisting the piece...
