    STAR SR20 RIII

Has anyone noticed that G87 doesn't work on the Star SR20 RIII? I have heard that the cross peck drilling cycle doesn't work on this machine. If anyone knows for a fact either way I'd appreciate to hear from you.

    Thanks

Im not sure about the G87 but if you have a floating holder this is a good working macro taping program:

    T0303(4-40 CROSS TAP)
    G50W-.194

    #100=350 (RPM)
    #101=.025 (FEED/pitch)
    #102=[#100*#101]
    G0 G98 X# Z# M23S#100 (cross tool on clockwise)
    C0. (or c whatever)
    G4U.5
    G1X-.36F#102 (X end depth)
    M24S#100 (cross tool CCW)
    G4P5
    X.3 (X above stock)
    G0X1.496 T0 M25 (X home, cross tool off)
    G50W.194
    M51

If you break a tap reduce the feed from actual to 90%, if that breaks reduce feed to 80%. Actual pitch usually works but a couple times ive had to use 80%

Let me know if that works for you

I don't think I've ever heard a more ridiculous statement. G87 most certainly works.

It's been over 4 years since I last programmed, setup or ran one of those, so forgive my probably ignorance.

It is not unusual for Star to have modified the basic G87 into something like a G287 using the available Fanuc custom G-code function. That's especially likely if the application is needed for the cross-working tools that have to peck in the Y axis. Check your documentation.

    G87 cross pecking cycle

I had this problem years back with a SR-20 RII. Turns out when I programed
G87 it seemed like it just went to the bottom of the z stroke in rapid. (and of course the drill broke) Turns out it was a parameter setting. It was set for high speed pecking. So I suggest checking out your parameter manual or calling you Star Rep to find out what parameter to change. Hope this helps.

Check your coordinate system. On the RII there are G17, G18, G19, G117, G118, and G119 CS's. It will do exactly as you say if you don't change to the correct coordinate system. I think that it's G118 if you're using 3100-3500.
