    Spindle Question

    We have a 1995 VMC 15XT with a 7500rpm spindle
The machine is making a strange (squeaking, squealing) sound.
I removed the belt from the motor to the gearbox to help identify where the sound is coming from.
When I start the spindle it will run for a few seconds then alarm.
Sorry don’t remember what the alarm message was.
I assume the machine is looking for a signal from the hall effect switch and isn’t seeing it and alarming.

    Now for the question
Is there a way to run the spindle motor without the belt going to the gearbox for diagnostics?

    Thanks for your help
    Erich

I will add a question to this
How does the encoder come off of the spindle?
I have loosened the small set screw from the encoder to the shaft and verified that it is loose
Then I removed the two larger phillips screws from the mounting bracket to the motor case, with no luck
Then I removed the 2 smaller phillips screws from the encoder to the mounting bracket with no luck.
I don’t want to force it, any advice out there
    Thanks Erich

Turn the spindle by hand if you feel any drag, bearings are gone!
