Hello Everyone,

I’m a student here in Ontario, we have decided to retrofit an old manual lathe into a filament winder. I Have very limited experience when it comes to the electronics side of this, I was hoping to get some advise.
There seems to be an almost endless supply of options. I will be using stepper motors to simplify things, haven’t decided if I will run the spindle manually with a resolver or use a stepper. My main question is: How to drive the steppers? The steppers have to be told what to do. I don’t really understand my best option. PC based? Microcontrollers? PLC?
I’m in the very beginning stages of gathering information and was just looking for a direction to travel. Any advise would be great!
