Shim the part or the vise

    Totally a rookie question.

The table of the lathe on the Y axis is off by .00025 across a 4" run. I trammed it in and then just checked it with a pro tram (which is really cool by the way).

Anyway, when I put my vise on it is off .003 across the same distance.

First off, yes, it is a cheaper vise. I know that.

But, should I shim the vise to the table, the part to the table or suck it up as one should not shim either?

Took the vise off the rotating base and mounted to the table and now off .0015 while dead on everywhere else.

Ok. So I took the vise off the rotating base and that got it to .0015. Based on a pm I received I used a piece of shim stock to get the bed of the vise dead on.

What ever works is acceptable as long as it doesnt put you in harms way.

I shim the vice. My table leans just a hair to the rear so I put a tiny bit of foil in the rear and that makes the vice bed dead flat. I'd rather shim the vice that fiddle with every time I clamp a part.
