may be a stupid question but......

other than its use and the gas used whats the difference between a plasma cutter and a tig welder, i've noticed that they share quite a few common functions and i was wondering if i had a plasma cutter what would stop me from using it (with the right equipment like gas and tig torch) as a tig welder?

just for arguements sake i have a cheap chinese plasma cutter that i got for nothing with a couple of other machines and i've managed to repair it using parts from another machine, its a giant cut 40, and has a selectable power from 20 to 40 (amps?)
