no, that wont work for various reasons:

First the type of slider in ur drawin has a lot of play to the sides

and second taken from ur drawing a lot of force is applied to the ball / leadscrews, they would just jam as soon as u would start routing.

there are linear rails which do support single rail mounting but i dont think its advisable in general

there are a lot more major errors in ur drawing, propably the best idea would be to redo it.

Yeah you don't want side loads on the screw, moreso use it as a second rail!

What about the board at the bottom spanning the y axis? How are you going to cut through that? Are you going to build a table top above that? Their are a bunch of mdf plans out there already why not use some of those. There is no support on your uprights, your gantry will rack back and forth under a load.

So you are saying that these supported rails suck?

They dont exactly suck, if u use two blocks per rail and a two rail configuration for every axis they are good enough, especially if the machine is build from mdf or similar, have a look at my old machine:

i think this is pretty much what op wants to build.

that build was based completely on that kind of rails.

there are various pics of the build in the beginning of the build logs linked here:

Hmmm! I guess you seriously need to think about making it though, before wasting MDF .

    lenne0815,
Thanks for that clarification on that, I currently have been using my DIY JGRO mdf router. It has been a very good machine for what it is but now I have been collecting parts for and welding up a new all metal monster for machine no. 2 and was going to get some of the above listed rails for the long x axis (60") and did not want to waste any money on them if they were sloppy.
I do apologize to the OP for digressing in his thread.
Please do continue with your designing process and keep us all posted with your updates as this IS the place to ask all of these sorts of questions.
    Tom
