Both wiring options are valid depending on the BOB you use, but for the BOB you said you have it should be wired like this picture that is in the KL-5056D manual that you can download from the following link:

Alrighty, done. Now it goes very slowly and in one direction only. GAH!

Any other ideas?

Edit: I set Step Low Active and Dir Low active and now it turns both ways but VERY slowly. I have it set to 2 microsteps and 4000 steps per inch, though it doesnt seem to matter. Even at 10000 steps per inch it crawls along. Could it need a resistor as in the diagram?

What control software are you using? The manual says you need a minimum 2500 nano-second step pulse and a minimum 2500 nano-second low level width. If using Mach 3, try Sherline 1/2 pulse mode under Config/Ports and pins.

Ok, I switched on Sherline 1/2 step mode and it turns in one direction only again. It does seem a touch faster though. What is the "nanosecond low level width"? Can I check this? And yes, im using Mach 3.

Basically, the step pulses work between +5 and 0 volts. The pulse width is the length of time when the signal is +5V. The low level width is the length of time when the signal is 0 volts. As I understand it, the Sherline mode forces the low level signal to be the same as the pulse signal.

Well, everything is as it should be. The thing doesnt work. I guess I'll try to call AT support tomorrow and if they cant figure it out I'll send it back and try to get a refund. Wow, this is terrible. Ive wasted a month messing with these KL5056's and will have to wait another month to get a new driver from China.

Thanks for all your help! If you can think of anything else that may be an issue, please let me know. I would much rather use the driver I have on hand

Yes, ive tried all sorts of combinations. It has the same effect on whatever motor/ axis its driving.

This is just a wild guess (and maybe you've already tried it - I haven't gone all the way back to re-read this thread).

Is it possible that you have set the DIP switches to the opposite direction of what you intended, so that your "on" switches are actually "off" and vice-versa?

Nope, tried and checked that. I called John at AT customer support and he doesnt seem to know what the problem is either. Im going to send him some pictures of the set-up and hope that helps solve the mystery.
