thats pretty easy, you get something like a colour organ the lights react to the music, but what hes got is put threw a PC and its controlled by MIDI, it pretty cool stuff alot of fun if you can get your PC running right

    WHEW!!!

I showed it to my 4 year old son and it played for a good half hour at full volume while he danced around the room, I wish that I had his energy. Now I can't get that tune out of my head. --HELP--

I saw that same thing on another site about a week ago. My boss' neighbor down the block did something similar to that last year but with even more lights. He had the music ran thru a small F.M. transmitter and as you drove up you would tune your radio to the station and listen. It would shut down at 10 PM so as not to annoy the neighbors anymore. I'll say this though there was a small fortune in extension cords plugged into one HUGE box full of outlets. One tree/item - one cord.
If it's not nailed down, it's mine.
If I can pry it loose, it's not nailed down.

This gave me an idea for next year!

    The person used these controlers:

And he has 88 channels of control.

I watched it like uh..uh.. a lot of times

Dennis, Thank you for sending this. I have forwarded this to an engineer friend who works with PLCs to see if he can emulate.

He lives near to me. The local police forced him to shut it down after a few dumb people had accidents driving by. It's all computer controlled and very well done. The whole presentation lasts 12 minutes.

I bet within two Christmas seasons this sort of thing will be so common.
For those who are mp3 downloaders, the music is by Trans-Siberian Orchestra on the album,The Lost Christmas Eve - 04 - Wizards in Winter.

I'm thinking about doing this with an old computer and some solid state relays hooked to the parallel port. There is a plug-in for winamp that drives the parallel port. I would just do it on the tree though.

Was talking with Art today and he suddenly took such an interest, that he was talking about doing something similar to his house. You realise that Mach was spawned out of Art wanting to write softawre for his own machine. Who knows there may even be a MachLights on the horizon. But with his work load I wouldnt hold your breath.

Another answer......... Why paint a picture? Why write a song? Why have different coloured clothes? Person expression, art.
Probably for the same reason you cut decorative timber features on the outside of your house.
