Awesome, thanks, do these monitor all axis simultaneously?

The loop is closed at the Drive, all Drives are synchronized, & controlled by the controls output, Mach3 in this case

    all Drives are synchronized
If one motor loses position, the other motors will not be synchronized to that motor. The best you can hope for is to stop the machine at that point. At least when using Mach3.

Thanks, that is what I was wondering.

Just curious, what other software will correct all the motors should one fall out of step? Seems there is no huge cost benefit to having closed loop if you can't get this side of it going?

EMC works that way, if you can get it to work. Configuring it can be something of a nightmare, especially if you're not familiar with Linux. But it will close the feedback loop in software, instead of at the drive, which is what you need if you want the motors to compensate for positional errors.

    If one motor loses position

If this did happen all 3 or 4 Drives would stop, Servos with good encoders do not lose position

Even with a power cut, Dmm have absolute encoders, it wll remember were it stopped as long as the time stopped is not to long

Once you are talking 5hp spindle they are very heavy and then chassis costs go right up as you need a chassis capable of moving all that weight around at high speeds without flex and drive costs go right up to match.

In a production environment you might be better off with two medium speed machines instead of one high speed machine?
    That's seems to be true!

Can anyone recommend a full servo/drive package, or links to them that would be good value for Nema 34 applications? Also, are the Gekko drives the most reliable thing to drive them with?

Thanks for all the heaps of info here guys. It's very much appreciated and is going a long way.

These FlashCut packages are pricey but very reliable and high quality: Benchtop CNC Retrofit Kits Specs Servo

I have a FlashCut NEMA 23 servo package on my small mill and have not had a single problem in several years.
