Another USB parallel port thread ;)

    Hi

Can anyone help me install a USB > Parallel adapter for use with EMC2?

I have a PCI-E hardware card installed in the PC, that controls the step, direction, e-stop and limit switches. I would like to use the usb port just to add some additional inputs (such as a home button, start program, stop program, spindle start/stop and move to toolchange)

I dont want this to run as a real time input (its not required) just a few non essential, but quite handy inputs.

    Thanks

    G

USB to parallel adapters don't work.

If EMC supports it, another PCI card would be your best bet.

it is a mini form factor pc, and the pci-e card is using the only slot. Its the best pc i have used yet with EMC, with base times of 17622ns (my old system constantly gave realtime errors) none with this one.

What other options are available for adding more inputs?

I am a quite capable programmer, but I cannot find any docs on how to integrate custom hardware with the hal. If i can find that then I can build a controller using a PIC/AVR etc that has 30 or so low speed inputs/outputs.

    Thanks

You could try a dual port db25 for your additional controls. Single card with dual db25 io connectors.

Small PC with a small chassis, it only takes the half height cards, and only has one backplate (used by the pci-e card)

How do these pendants work? Does anyone know, as they seem to be USB.

Why not use a USB (or even Bluetooth) Joy pad.
I have used both a PS3 and wired X-Box joy pad.
You should be able to map any of the input buttons to do want you want.
    Have a look at:

Look up "pokeys" which appears to EMC as a keyboard. It is programmable and I think has 55 or so inputs. Or you can do like I am going to do and gut a usb keyboard and use the board out of it hooked to a custom panel.

hidcomp - EMC/LinuxCNC USB HID interface component
Generic HID - DIY USB HID / Joystick / CNC Pendant

here is a couple fancy USB control software for linuxcnc (and one for windows)
They are outside linuxcnc's source code base.
If only to base your work from.
