    Question DIY Lead nut ?

    Guys,

Any ideas for creating lead nut from nylon nut?
I have 5/16" nylon nut and tried to clamp it with alumunium tube and plate but sometimes it's slipped away, any idea what's the best glue for it ?
I've tried using super glue, sometimes it's not strong enough,
what's a glue for metal to nylon ?

    Thanks

Have you tried Epoxy. If that doesn't work you might have to use

    setscrews.

do you have a photo of setscrews ?
I haven't tried epoxy, you remind me...is it strong enough to hold alumunium ?

    Nylon is not that glueable...

But you can try soaking it in water (or maybe even wetting it prior to glueing) and then use Polyurethane wood glue. That cures with moisture and foams/expands during curing.

I use PU wood glue to glue stainless rod ends in to epoxy/carbon tubing.

Epoxy bonds quite well to most metals but when faced with different thermal expansion (usually in longer joints) can work itself loose.

Would it be possible to replace the ali tube with brass or copper and solder a copper or brass washer on each end, with a clearance hole for the leadscrew, to retain the nylon?

Any round rotational surface can have the same issue. What's normally done there?

Not shown are drilling and taping along the joint and using a screw(s) as a key.

Also previously mentioned is a set screw, but as you can see below, sometimes that fails

Notice the flat is almost at the top and the pulley set screw is against the round part, not the flat.

When we join parts to aluminum (in model rockets) we generally use JBweld and you have to be damn sure the aluminum is scuffed up and get the epoxy on right away. Aluminum oxidizes pretty quickly and there have been more than one failure attributed to a poor bond.

Not much is going to stick to the nylon. So what you do is make it a shape you can clamp such as..

Or you create slots/splines in the nylon and create a key with something like JBweld. You could cut slots in the aluminum something like

Then slide the nut in and slot the nylon {a bit} and then fill that area with JBweld.

    JBweld if you didn't know:

JB-weld is some kind of a epoxy glue, isn't it ?
