    Ogee router bit

I have had my cnc router for about a year and have only used end mill bits from Onsrud or Centurion. I am currently working on a project and would like to use an ogee bit, but was wondering if it would be okay to use one purchased from Lowes/Home Depot--in other words, a bit not necessarily designed for a cnc router.

Yes, as long as it doesn't have a bearing on it.

They probably don't have one without a bearing pilot. You could grind the bearing journal off. Or you can buy one from Amana which is purpose-made for CNC...

Onsrud has a few discontinued(?) bits on ebay right now that seems well priced, not many to choose from though. At under $10 each with free shipping cutting the bearing of might be worth trying. Saw Blades, Solid Carbide Router Bits items in LMT Onsrud Router Bits and Blades store on eBay!

But they still have the mounting boss hanging below the cutting surfaces which would need to be cut off.

MDF Cabinet Doors Insert Router Bits Utilizing Nova

You could also do it in two operations with a core box bit and roundover groove bit.

That would be the exception... Sears does make an arbor with interchangeable cutters and solid pilots, though they are only HSS...

Being new to cnc ... i made few bad purchases recently.

right now I am sitting on 6 pieces of whiteside 2001, 5 pieces of onsrud 44-03 and one each of onsrud 41-022 and 43-02 ... all of them have bearing on them. Got them from ebay and monitory value is not much and have no desire or ability to pack these bits and send back to two different vendors. Beside these new acquisitions, I do have number of other bits which I bought with hand router couple of years ago, which I was never able to use.

so .... i take out the bearing with wrench. this sound easy/doable. what is mounting boss and how somebody take it out? I do have grinder and sander.
If removing of mounting boss is difficult, is there any thing wrong in doing a profile using end mill equal or greater to dia of mounting boss and then use the bit with mounting boss?

    Thanks

just want to update ... hope it will help somebody else.

sent a message to ebay onsrud store and end up getting a call from their tech support. tech support spent about an hour with me and gave me feed, speed and cut depth of all the onsrud bits I had (I was using GWiz and numbers from onsrud are more aggressive). As for form cutter with the bearing at the bottom, tech support told me that I can simply/safely get the bearing off and just do a profile cut with at least 1/8 bit for hanging piece below the form cutter.

as for whiteside bit, i sent the message to ebay seller to my surprise, he asked me to just keep the cutter and gave me a fair trade to other cutters. I will take off bearing for whiteside cutter as well and see if I can use the same trick as onsrud tech support gave me.

    Regards,

Just be careful that you don't crash the bearing boss into your part.

    Gerry,

Yup, I am little worried too. I have enough cutters to be able to put bearing bits on the side for now.

It is not as simple as I am putting here and I am glad you gave me a chance to clarify for anybody in my position ... while talking about depth of cut for form bits, tech support told me that I can use the full depth but start bringing the cutter inward quarter inch at a time. At this point not sure how complicated this operation would be with something hanging below the bit (look simple but not sure). As you said, need to be careful, slow and easy till I get some experience.
