Hi All,

Can someone show me the bits you typically use to cut out guitar bodies and necks?

And when to use each bit?

I've used long series 1/4" 2 flute carbide endmills to cutout bodies and necks in the past. Get an endmill with a long enough flute length to do a finishing pass on the total body thickness. They are relatively easy to find.

You can also cut the fret slots with a 0.023" endmill, but need to find one with a long enough flute length to cut the slot deep enough for the tang, unless you follow the profile of each fret slot. I also do all of the inlay with the same sized mill just to keep it simple.

I don't use router bits. I use solid carbide end mills, the best I can get.

My two favorites are G.W. Schultz high helix 3 flute types and Ultratool high helix 2 flute types. The G.W. Schultz type cuts more efficiently but due to the nature of its grind, it may not last as long. However, both brands have exceptionally fine edge grinding quality and leave incredible surface finishes on the cut wood surfaces.


Ordinary router bits just suck. I don't use them if I don't have to.
