    Huanyang VFD not starting consistently

    Hi all,
    I have a 3kW Chinese spindle and 3kW VFD. I did a factory reset, and programmed what I think are all of the necessary parameters. The problem is that when I try to turn it on it jitters a little before starting, if it starts at all. Sometimes it just buzzes until the drive faults. If it does start it's not always in the corrrect direction. If I spin it fast enough by hand before starting, it will go the right direction. Once running it is smooth and quiet.

    I messed with the mid voltage and frequency (staying pretty close to the factory presets), and starting frequency with not much luck.

    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

    What mode is the drive in? What is the ramp up time set to? Can you start it from the keypad on the drive? Are you running single phase or three phase to it? Are the motor parameters set correctly? Lots of reasons why, I found that drive to actually be not too bad personally, and I work with a lot of baldor, yaskawa, fuji etc..

    Hi, thanks for your reply. I'm not sure what you mean by Mode. I am running it with the keypad, ramp time set to 10 sec. I'm using 220V single phase. Here are the parameters I set:

    First I set PD013 to 08 to do a factory reset. Then I set the following:

    PD005=400 (Max Frequecy)
    PD004=400 (Base Frequency)
    PD003=400 (main Frequency)
    PD144=3000 (To read correct speed on the display, which it does)
    PD008=220 (Max Voltage)
    PD014=10 (Accel time)
    PD015=10 (Decel time)
    PD041=15 (Carrier Frequency) I haven't tried turning this down now that I think about it.
    PD141=220 (Motor nameplate voltage)
    PD142=11 (motor maneplate current) My actual nameplate current is 12, but it looks like it's only drawing a couple of amps when accelerating
    PD143=2 (Number of poles)
    PD176=1 (60Hz)

    PD006 (intermediate frequency) is set to 2.5 from the factory. I forgot what Intermediate Voltage was, but tried adjusting both with no luck.

    I have also messed with PD007 (Min Starting Frequency.) Raising it help a little, but not good enough.

    I have not messed with PD043 (S-curve Accel/Decel)

    Am I missing anything?

    Almost sounds like the motor is 'single phasing' (one phase missing) on or to the motor?

    Hmn, I had't thought of that. I did check phase-to-phase resistance at the motor and the windings are all the same, but didn't open up the connector. I hope you're right! Thanks.

    Freq seems a little high, you sure on that?
    Base freq and max are the same, I assume your not using variable speed?
    And double check the PD143, seems to me you'd have more poles?

    underthetire, the specs were correct, see first pic in this thread-

    I can vary the speed for now with the keypad, and will use the RS485 to control it with Mach3. Thanks for the ideas though.

    And Hey! Look what I found in the attached picture. The guy I bought it from soldered one of the phases to the ground terminal. Lucky it didn't shock the crap out of me- I didn't touch it when it was running because I knew it wasn't grounded. I would have found it when I replace the cord with a shielded 4-wire one, but that would not have been for a while.

    Al, you really are The Man!

    Thanks!

    Did you see the recent post on these type of spindles where the ground was attached to the connector internally, but the connector was isolated from frame ground!!
    Hence the motor was not grounded!
