PIc and L298 stepper driver with microstepping

hello ppl. i found nice open source Stepper driver that use L298 and pic.
    I can do 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 microsteps per full step.
and can be easly modified to work with L6203 or discrete. it can be made with smd or normal components. here is link

That is an excellent design. I done a discrete version, but the L6203 is a good choice to simplify things if you don't need high voltage and current. Its function is nearly identical to the L298. It is a simple matter to do the substitution.

The total parts count and price seem a bit high. no?

I don't think it's worth the trouble for a run of the mill 4 amp, 40v drive. The thb6064 is much simpler. But a discrete design will handle 70v, 7A easily. The board provides endless opportunities for customization by software. It's ideal for experimenters. I've included provisions for an encoder so that I can play with closed loop control.

Microchip's circuit was done to showcase their products. It can be simplified. My discrete design fits on a 2.5" x 2.5" pcb.
