Hi All-

I am looking to see if anyone can reccommend a good engraving tool to run in my cnc mill. I have a 10,000 rpm spindle and am engraving p/n's .005 deep in 4130 N steel. I am looking for somthing that will last for a while.

Anyone have any good experiance?

I am using a 90 degree split point Harvey Tool coated cutter. My first experiance with it yesterday was not so great as I think I chipped the tip. I also had a bad collet that ran out .004" So I will try it again this morning.

Guessing you are using a hobby machine too. That does not help. Feed in the last 0.010" extra slow or ramp in (which makes programming way more complicated).

No a Fadal 15xt. I am plunging in at 50% of the feedrate. Currently 8 ipm feed and 4 ipm plunge. wish i could go faster but the characters suffer at 30 ipm. The text is .150 in height. I would imagine that the fadal does not like the quick acceleration and deceleration on the short lines for the characters.

4 IPM plunge might be the problem in steel. Slow down to 1.
