Using a 80w tube with 150w power supply?

    Hi everyone,

I have had a LOT of problems getting a working 150w machine, on to tube #5 (sometime, still deciding if I should order a spare to double my latest chances, would be a few weeks best case).

In the meantime I ordered a 80w RECI rebranded coletech tube, which I'll find out today if it arrived unbroken from DHL. I've read you can use a higher power supply to run a smaller tube.....but I'm not sure that 150w to 80w was what any of the posts I read had in mind. The triggering voltage is much different, but I am no electrical engineer so not sure if that is a big red flag or not.

Anybody care to hazard a suggestion? I think my course of action will be to buy or locate a 80w power supply if the tube is unbroken.

And, yes, I realize I will have to dial the output of the tube way down for the actual operation of the machine!

    Thanks in advance, Greg

    Hi Air Gunner,

I noticed this is your first post in the laser section.

Thanks for posting, but I don't think that is necessarily the case for lasers.....what's your experience on these machines?

It may well be that I spouted off where I shouldn't have. I take it lasers are like diodes in that they will pull as much power as is given to them?

AiR_GuNNeR you better shut up than talk such stupidity.
Every laser "tube" and every laser PSU has its own triggering volltage, trigerring current, work voltage and current.
If you use 150W PSU for 80W "tube" you will shorten "tubes" life extremely.
You can use 100W PSU for 80W "tube" but not 150W PSU.

Yeah...........I ordered the 80w power supply.

Having an unbroken tube makes it seem more worthwhile! Kudos to coletech for good packaging and good fragile stickers, better than RECI normally has. Either that or RECI is getting better.

Thanks for the educated opinion, stops me from hooking it up tonight!

Yep, that's why I admitted I answered when I shouldn't have...and certainly will keep that in mind in the future posts. As to the harsh words, ("shut up"?), sheesh, who stuck the pickle up your a$$? It must me nice never to have made a mistake cinematic2.
