    DIY LIL CNC

I was looking at the instructions to build your own "LIL CNC" online.
    DIYLILCNC
i was curious if there would be a way to beef it up a little without having to change a whole lot in required materials or design. Obviously some material change will be required but i was mainly trying to see if it was possible to do so without having to change the design drastically.

No. It's a pen plotter. It's made with cheap plywood, wide open nuts (un-captured), and cheap screws/motors. You need to beef it up a LOT if you expect it to be more than a plotter.
