    Machine Spec. advice needed

    All,
    I was hoping someone could give me a starting point on what size punch press to get. We will be stamping out 1/8" knife blanks that are 1.5" x 9". I see punch presses all over the place from 40ton to 500ton. I'm not sure which size I should be looking at. I'm hoping its in the 40 to 50 ton range since they are a lot more affordable. Thank you for your help in advance.

    Well, we will assume steel, since you said knife blanks. But material does make a difference. Looks like you have approximately 21" inches. Now find out the shear strength on 1/8" steel by 21" and then double that. I will toss out a wild guess without looking up any data that you will want about 160 tons.
