    TTS 3/4" Reamer DIY...

I have a few parts I need to ream at .75" and my reamer is .6245" give or take. I've thought about making a simple sleeve and just shoving that in the spindle, but now I'm thinking I want this to be a permanent tool member. Since an ER20 will only fit 13mm max, I'm left with another TTS DIY.

I have a TTS blank and a 5/16" set screw holder that I never use. If I was to bore out the 5/16" set screw holder to .6245" I would be in the clear. Now after inspecting the tools a little more I noticed down into the TTS ring past the shank is even smaller in diameter.

If I bored the TTS all the way thru I'd be at 0.05" wall thickness. I can see the shanks are hardened, but the rest of the tool holder isn't.

Any thoughts or a better options ?

Turning the holder down to a 0.05" wall would be, in a word, crazy. And very dangerous. Why not simply use an R8 collet?

    Chris,

I know they make sleeves for this, I have one of those, it is .375 id x .625 od.
Where it came from I dont know, this would be the way to go as they are split and hardened.

I think I got it in a lot of tooling from a plant closing.

I would think you could bore the holder you have, just dont bore into the shank part as .050 isnt much material left.

    Hi Ray,
.05" wall thickness at the shank, I was thinking the same thing. I was trying to avoid having to unscrew the short shank TTS R8 every tool change. Maybe I shouldn't have said a few, more like 75 - 100 pcs. I've already cut 3" off the shanks length. I'm curious if I'd be ok inserting that reamer at 2.3" deep into the blank secured with a set screw ?

    Hi Mike,
Do you have a pic I could check out ? I just figured it's only a reamer moving in a downward cutting motion. Not actually milling with it, I might be able to swing it...

I didnt find a straight drill sleeve, but did find a 5/8 drill chuck and arbor at Shars for a total of 14 bucks.202-5005 chuck arbor 202-1310. The 3/4 is only a couple bucks more.
I bought two of these 1/2" capacity and arbors and the runout is less than .0005.

The r8 collet sounds like the less expensive option.

I use a .75" reamer on my gang tool holders. My solution was to modify the reamer to fit a 1/2" set screw holder.

If replacing a reamer is an option, you can get one with a .75" shank, and make a bolt-on shoulder to turn it into a TTS tool.

Why not make a 3/4 inch sleeve to go over the .6245 shank, glue it on with some loctite and locate your tool against the spindle like a real TTS holder.
You can buy GOOD PARTS or you can buy CHEAP PARTS, but you can't buy GOOD CHEAP PARTS.
