    Rigid tapping formula

    Hello All,

Would someone please post the formula for figuring out the tapping feedrate on a mill?

    Thanks!

Ok. Let's think about this. For a tap to tap, it has to move a certain amount along the axle length for every revolution it makes. So, for a certain number of revolutions in one minute, it will need to make a certain amount of travel in the Z axis that match those revolutions.

So, for a 1/4-20 tap, the tap needs to move 0.050" in Z for every revolution. If you are turning the tap at 1000 RPM the tap will need to move in Z 1000 times the 0.050" each minute.

So, the resulting formula is based on inches per revolution times revolutions per minute equals the inches per minute.

if you use the g84 tapping cycle you just use the thread pitch as the feedrate.

Depends on the machine, the control, and the settings. Maybe one could. Maybe one could not.
