    Dumb question about screw threads

Hi this is a dumb question - just want to make sure on this for a little sketch I am drawing pardon my ignorance LOL.

I have a shaft with right hand threads on one end, and left hand threads on the other end.

I don't need a RH and a LH nut do I? Don't I just flip the nut over and a RH nut becomes a LH nut - is this correct?

Sorry. Screw ups don't work that way.

To avoid this sort of mistake in the future think about flipping your hand over. Does the right become the left?

    Seriously??????????

That's a question that could only come from The Peoples Republic of Madison, WI where everything is left or extremely left.

When was the last time you tried to put a nut on a bolt and you had to worry about which way it faced?

I don't know the origin of the post, or if was serious.
    But...
A right hand thread has a helix angle that descends from right to left, and a left hand thread has a helix angle that descends from left to right, flipping it changes nothing.
Your shaft will require a separate nut for each side.

But if you could look at the face of a clock from behind, would it not seem to be running counterclockwise? So why not think flipping a bolt would work?

    I explained it better.

It would seem to be running counterclockwise, but you forget the numbers would also be reversed so the time is still correct. The bolt and nut problem is more similar to flipping the face of the clock but not the hands, now when you look at it from the back, it still needs to turn clockwise to tell time correctly.

I'm talking to a person who thinks flipping a nut with a right handed thread may make it left handed.
    Need I say more?

If it is a cad drawing, mirror the nut and it will be left hand. Results in real life will be different.
