    New(ish) Taig Owner, making videos as I go

    Hi Everyone,

    I've been lurking around here, especially as I tried to figure out what kind of mill I wanted to buy. The Taig won out (bought from Nick Carter) and ended up getting controls from Soigeneris (Jeff Birt is a regular around here too!). Overall, it's been a smooth experience, which I attribute to the tools I bought.

    Anyway, I've been making videos as I go along. Here are some of the ones I've made so far:

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ni-bSP-JZE"]Introduction to my journey[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vslqK_PcCcw"]Rough (Mechanical) Setup[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBZ7sF4L6jQ"]Slightly Shocking Discovery[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9pGyqneO54"]Mill Reassembly, Leveling and Motor Mount[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OpR7LrGGzVc"]First Cut[/ame]

    [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Up7iNWYd7xI"]Oiling, Squaring and Tramming the Mill[/ame]

    I'm an EE by trade, so hopefully I don't sound like too big of an idiot. Thanks again to everyone who posts here!

    Even if your ground and neutral were crossed it should not cause that symptom.
    It is imperative you ground the machine properly however, I would guess your motor has some leakage to ground from the live conductor.
    It is especially critical on CNC equipment otherwise you are going to get all kinds of spurious tripping of limits etc.

    Chris, you should not be shocked by the machine. I noticed in the video you say you have the old two pronged outlets. This is likely a big part of the problem. The first thing i would check is your breaker panel. The neutral should be bonded to earth ground in the panel (and only in the panel). The Earth ground coming into your panel will be bonded to a ground rod near where your power meter is. Make sure that connection is good. Note, that the ground rod may be on one side of your house and the water pipe on the other. A difference of 50 feet can yield a potential difference (voltage) large enough to shock you. If you have this problem then you will need to bond the water pipe to the Earth ground (at the panel).

    The old 'two prong' wiring is also a concern. The earth ground is a safety device and is also used by AC filters in all of your electronics to bleed off noise. If the earth ground is missing there could be enough leakage through a filter to shock you (had a customer in Singapore have this problem due to a faulty plug adapter.) It would be a good idea to get help from an electrician if your unsure about how to rewire things yourself.

    Yup, I installed all new wiring at the end of the video. Completely fixed the problem.

    Great, glad to hear you got it sorted. Had a similar thing happen to me once. The project light on my lathe had an old non-polarized two prong plug. If you plugged it in the wrong direction the lathe would be hot. You wouldn't notice though unless you touched the lathe and band-saw (which was grounded) at the same time
