    Unhappy Milling machine design

    Hi

I am doing a cnc conversion on an old Beaver model A milling machine and am having some accuracy issues with the Y axis.
The machine has had all guides refurbished and lead screws changed to ball screws.
The Y axis lead screw is not at center of saddle but is positioned on the right side.
Dose anyone know if such an arrangement has caused accuracy problems.
The X axis pushes the top table at center and i have no problems what so ever.

    Thanks

Hi, if you have dovetail slides instead of linear rails which I think you have on that model, you'll have to have the Y slides a wee bit tighter to ensure you don't get deflection at the table from the offset screw.

The dovetails will produce friction and that goes in relation to the accuracy of the travel, which means the Y axis stepper might miss a step if the slides are tightened too much to remove any hint of table slewing at the Y dovetails.

This may be so small as to be not noticeable, unless you measure any movement at the table extreme travel position, but the spindle will always be centred on the Y axis, so I don't think you will have a problem.
