    Question V23 to V25... Should I??

Just working through the posts and bugs as it goes with V23.... Now they are offering me V25 at a discount, but I'm not sure if going through all of the bugs is worth it. I about have V23 working well with my machine.... What do you think? What is the benifit? V23 does have a few problems that I don't think they will ever fix... as far as V23 goes. Those items are likely taken care of in 25... but they are not that big a problem for me.

So who has taken the leap and how did it go?
Current situation has me without internet... So upadating and getting help is a bit more dificult until I get connected again...

I (we) have and was it worth it.....yes if only for the Simulate aspect and the fairly cheap upgrade. I still run through predator for the final program.

I only use the 3D features and it seems very good at that but then again I had no real problems with V23.

There are a few niggle bits with V25 that I recall were much simpler and easier in V23 but once you know about them all is OK.

If you have V23 tool features they will all have to be converted manually to the V25 standard which takes a little time.

Otherwise I am happy and it keeps us up to date.

I suppose I should have added I have not, as yet, had cause to go back to V23.

    Martin,

You are using a cnc masters machine? Can you tell me more about the type of work you do? From V23 to V25 there are a bunch of new features and depending on the type work you are doing it could make a big difference in your day to day...

I see you have a 4th axis, just so you know the V23 4 axis came standard with the Milling software, in the V25 4 axis is an option. So when you talk with your salesman if you want to program your 4th axis make sure to talk about that option.

Some of the key features that I feel are a big upgrade for V23 to V25

    1) Stock wizard

If you are importing files from other CAD packages it makes it easy to setup you stock for simulation and your part zero. Instead of having to move your part to 00 you can just pick where you want zero to be.

    2) Multiple setups

You now can program more than 1 setup in a drawing, so if you need to program a flip or the side of the part you can do everything in 1 file.

    3) 2D enhancements

Picking top and bottom of job off geometry that is on the screen, Profile contour ramping, surface picking, open pockets, engraving lines that cross. I think these are some of the main improvements for 2D programming.

    4) 32/ 64 bit versions, that are threaded. Allowing you to use more of your computers horse power.

    5) 3D - This would depend of if you were a standard or pro users, but all of the 3D tool paths now added the machining tolerance at the feature level. This makes it easy to adjust for roughing and finishing tolerances.

    6) New simulation

There are lots of other features but I think these 5 topics would be enough to justify you to move forward with the new version.

I started BobCAD with V23, skipped V24, but have upgraded to V25. The basic way you interact with the program is the same, but it is a much improved look and "flow". In general it is a very nice upgrade, but by no means did I find that I "had to do it". I am glad I did, but could have also continued with V23 if I didn't have the funds to upgrade. The one exception to that statement is the 4th and 5th axis add-ins. I did get those, and though I am not using them yet, once I get my machine upgraded they will be put to use. I could NOT do these applications to my satisfaction in V23 (4th was very crude and not worth using - I used DeskProto instead). I am able to do them in V25 just fine.

V25 is a pretty big step-change from v23, but it's worth it unless you have and need to have a dongle.

It's a bit of work to get going, but then you won't want to go back unless you need to.

Good point on the dongle... and I wish they had kept with an option to use a dongle. They will work with you for extra licenses if you explain the situation/need for multiple seats but a single user.

Thanks for the input... and yes I have 4th and plan on using it. and I also have a dongle which I like... I don't have multiple users... I'm a user with multiple computers. My current version has all the bells... as I did when I started with V21. They will have to keep all of my extras if they want me into 25. The only thing that bothers me with 23 is that some functions like telling it incremental or absolute don't work. The buttons do nothing. and they will never be fixed as they don't seem to be fixing bugs in 23.... I do understand this... but it is a slight issue.
Thanks again... Looks like I will have to ask and investigate....
