hurco hawk x axis encoder error or is it.

    Hi all
Well i have a more urgent problem

Have been testing the hurco today.cutting a dia to check if it cuts round for starters.
All seemed fine. Then ran the x and y axis up and down reasonably quick a few times.
Then Ran the same program again.X axis moved about a millimeter. So i thought encoder.
Which was a bit strange because its had a new one fitted just over a year ago.So i took
the complete servo motor and fitted to my other hawk and all seemed fine.swopped it back same
thing happen again.swapped it back to other one,no problem. But the last time i put the original
motor and encoder back on it wont calibrate in the x without saying x axis error or encoder error.
So for the last time i put it back on my other machine thinking i should get encoder error.I didnt

    Any ideas anyone please

Well it seems you have eliminated the motor/encoder so the next most likely suspect is the drive?
There is also a possibility that the encoder input on the controller has a problem, but I would suspect the drive first.
Can you swap these also to eliminate?

    Thanks Al
Are the x and y axis drive boards interchangeable. So i could just swap those and see if error goes to y axis

Check the part/model number, that should indicate if they are interchangeable, also if the x y motors are the same size?

    thanks Al
Just as you thought swapped x and y error followed.Just to make sure put board in the other machine
    and error followed.Thanks Al
Just one more question. Is there anything else that can make the boards go.Dont want to buy a new one
just for another component to blow the board again.
    Thanks again Al

The motor looks good so the only other thing usually would be a damaged cable?

Thanks Al and others for replies
New problem.Pretty sure drive board was part of the problem.Put board in off other machine along with
servo motor and encoder so pretty sure its not those. Now the x axis is still losing position in the x,up to 10mm worst case in one direction ie table moving right.
    Ideas welcome

Sounds like it is something mechanical, you will need to eliminate this as a problem first.
    Especially in one direction only?

If you can, with the power off, put a dial gauge on the final mover (table) and turn the motor shaft by hand within the range of the dial gauge, then turn exactly the same amount in the reverse direction, see if it returns to 0.

    Me again
Just like to say a big thank you to Al the man.Did some messing earlier and took the round connector apart
going into the servo drive motor and found one of the small black wires had come free.Would this cause the
symptoms i mentioned.ie make it loose position also could it have been this which made the board go
Thanks again to all who replied
