I would love to know how long it took them to orchestrate the program for that demonstration. I would be willing to bet that took several hundred tries to accomplish. Cost? Crashes??

Its probably some sort of magazine barfeed system with a collet chuck, newer ones are very accurate. The bars are pushed/pulled using hydraulics or a system of clamps and rolls. The chuck should keep it running true.

Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. I remember being blown away the first time I watched a screw machine (multispindle Gisholt IIRC) spitting out parts at a fraction of this thing's speed. Wasn't that many years later that I had responsibility for a double-ought Brown and Sharpe.

BTW, we who grew up with the witch doctor subjected our offspring to him. My son, in his twenties, is known to invoke the ting tang.

When you quote this you should give the attribution; Arthur C. Clark - science fiction writer and inventor of the geosynchronous satellite (among other things).

I work with swiss machines every day

    1) the programing is done by one person and doesnt take as long as you might think. 1 or 2 hours for the first vid.

    2) These machines do crash hard. I work with one that has a rapid travers of 2100 IPM. The one nice thing most swiss machines have is that you can prove out your program by running the machine with the hand wheel, move the wheel by hand and the machine only moves as fast as you do, not sure what it just did move the wheel backwards to see it again, this feature helps prevent allot of crashes.

    3) Most of these machines are feed with a automatic bar loader, you can load it with 10 to 50 12' bars (the number of bars depends on the stock dia.) and let the machine go, some jobs run for 5 days straight 24/7.

    4) Since the bar moves on the X axis these machines need a guide bushing to support the stock. The bushing does not do any clamping it just spins with the stock.

    Any more questions? Ask away

Happy New Year to every one on the Zone
