Atlas 10" Lathe Full Restoration + CNC (Project Log)

Starting with this sorry Atlas 10".

    Nice challenge..

Tearing into it. At the time I almost gave up but:

    Now on with full restore.

Started the bed today, still more to go on it but here it is de-greased and mostly stripped down and the rails roughly clean(er). I had to soak this in a bath of commercial de-greaser to get off all the grim, grease and old paint before beginning.

I need the the rails reground.. Anyone in the Chicago area that can handle 36" mill cuts??

Quick video update of some progress right before working on the bed. In this video I was convinced to not go forward.. well I am.

Bed is done. Decided to grind, file and lap the rails by hand. When I say 'lap' I mean wet grind on a flat surface, not with compound.

    Foot/feet cleaned, primed and repainted....

    Bed basically completely repainted

Banjo had a hair line crack/separation running through it. Found it after blasting. Ground material away, welded solid and reshaped back to original.

Managed to get some time to dismantle the headstock.. Nice to find everything together.

Started the process of de-greasing, ultrasonic cleaning then applying a stripper..

I'm interested in what your plan is for the cross slide. There's not much room in there for a ballscrew. I Have a 12" Craftsman very simmilar to this one that I had once thought about CNCing.

Wow. My laptop crashed... Couldn't get back until now.
As far as the cross slide I have a few ideas bouncing around but haven't committed to anything yet. Focused purely on restoring the lathe first and having it functions 100% original before conversion.
