I am hoping to build a larger CNC Lathe than my little Sherline . Got this spindle on Craigslist this week for 10 dollars. I was impressed with the fit of everything, no perceivable slop at all. Just wondering if anyone has used a traditional Lathe spindle on a rigid rail ballscrew build, and if anyone knows what make lathe this spindle may have come off?

That was certainly a bargain. Even if it needed a complete rebuild it is still a bargain.

I was impressed with the fit of everything, no perceivable slop at all.

Sadly there are guys out there parting out perfectly good hardware in the belief that they make more money in the process. Sad really!

I can't help you with the make however the V-belt pulleys may indicate a newer machine than some of the WW11 stuff.

I'm not sure what you mean by rigid ball screw build. If you mean a design using linear rails I'm certain there are examples out there. Your big challenge will be getting everything aligned properly, that and finding a stable pice of material for the bed. I don't see you having any problems with The spindle if operated with in its capabilities.
