    controller software recommendation--?

I'm helping a buddy convert a Grizzly G0704 mill to CNC. He has motors, and drivers picked out, and I'm helping with "the computer stuff".
I'm a little lost. What are my best-value options for controller software, and why would I use one or the other?

This is a hobby project, so we're keeping costs down, using free software when it doesn't limit our functionality or ease-of-use too much, etc.
Linux-based is ok if the software is friendly enough.

We both use Solidworks for work, and I'm not too worried about generating tool paths (although if you have an opinion, lay it down).
