A rigid tap is held in the toolholder in a manner where it cannot move in any direction. In a floating tap holder the tap can move a little in or out in the axis direction. This movement is spring loaded. For rigid tapping the feed rate has to be synchronized with the spindle. With the floating tap, the feed rate or spindle speed still have to be close, but if one or the other is off a little, the spring loaded movement takes care of it.
