Machine is like a 98 or so with FANUC MSC-518, 30 tool ATC

At M30 or so when it cuts power and unlocks the door the head is dropping enough to cause a positioning error.

Also it has been throwing tools and I'm wondering if the head is moving during tool change.

At this point I have recommended factory service look at the Z axis safety brake (holds the head up when power is off).

Any other ideas?

Yes, it's the brake. 15 minute repair.

As far as throwing tools, that's a different problem. Either someone bumped the z axis or the atc arm needs to be taken apart and cleaned/inspected. If the head gets bumped hard enough, it can slip the coupling putting z in a different home position.

Neither job is very tough.

They have had the arm apart several times lately - they thought the tensioner piston was gummed up and not gripping the tool. It was stripped down and cleaned and a few drops of DTE lite before re-assembly.

I don't know much about SV50B. We have a few NV5000 and throwing tool from ATC arm. Replaced springs and piston and still throwing tools. Finally found out that there's a rod and a collar at the center of ATC arm. Rod broke where the collar was attached to.

Have you checked rotation of the arm? How about the ATC claws, are they straight and not beat up? Is it throwing tools from both sides or just one?
Not very common to have that center rod break unless there are some arm alignment issues.

I have 1 CT40 cat claw left from NOS if you need one.
