What is possible? What you will!
I need to cut a chute. It is a tube that is 12.125 inches high. The top
of the tube is 11.625 inches in diameter (outside). The bottom of the
tube is 12.875 inches in diameter (outside). The material is 14 gauge steel.
Is there anyone out there that can help me with this? I know there is heating and plumbing software that would do this for me. But, this is the only one I will be cutting and I can not imagine spending boat loads of cash on software. Is there any software out there that might be free or cheap to create this with? Can someone give me a hand?
I know that I can unwrap and object in sketchup, but I can not export to dxf from sketchup. Anyone?
I know this may not be the best forum to post this in, but some of you guys are really good making dxf files. So I thought I would start here
This was done for a friend's desk.

A free program that will create a DXF is progeCAD 2008 SMART
A web search for "truncated cone pattern" will give examples of how to create the layout similar to the unwrap you do in Sketchup.
This link shows one pattern layout that is simple.
Weldtutor...
Thanks a ton! This is the first time I had to cut something like this. Rolling it will be another adventure But getting the cut right is the bigger problem. Thanks again for the info I will check it all out!

Just looking through some old posts got your DXF for the bears "C" . Do you have any other Bear drawings? I'm a woodworker too only been working with my CNC for about a year and half though......still learning
There is one HERE you might be interested in looking at.
I believe this has been asked before but can,t seem to find post .I would like to engrave a dxf and the only program I have for creating gcode is Cut3d. How do you take a dxf and make it into a 3d/dxf or save it as that.Cut 3d will not import dxf.
You could take the original image, and run it through bmp bender.
This will give you an stl file, which you may be able to use with your software....???? I don't know...it wouldn't work with mine.
Another way would be bmp2cnc....45 bucks worth of cheap....easy to use software, that creates g-code....you have to use a jpeg or bmp image though, not dxf.
Another g-code creating program which also imports bitmaps is bmp 2 xyz....45 bucks worth there as well.
Free trials on all of these programs mentioned.
What does cut3d import???
I'm a newbie myself, so take this for what it's worth....
Playing with fonts on a slow day & respectfully posted.
For something like engraving (I'll assume it's on a flat surface?), you might want to try CamBam & NcPlot, you can get a free version of both, you can get by with only CamBam but NcPlot is very good for double checking g-code. Links are below to both of the free versions that I used to create the g-code I posted below, I have no idea what the scale is, I just used the defaults in CamBam.
CamBam
Latest Stable Version (29 August 2007)
CamBam Beta 0.8 Release 2 MSI Installer (674KB) build 2797.19897
NCPlot
version 1.2

I made this in Inkscape, combined 3 clipart, duplicated the bones on the frame 5 times, did a union on everything, then saved as R12 dxf.
