Thanks Larry. I will used the .dxf extension going forward for searches. I think I will purchase the logo that is on the helmet. I'll post the finished product when I'm finished. It's nice to have a place like this to draw from you veteran's experience.

I did this one but my file is many layers as the finished piece is three layers and when I make a DXF file it puts all the layers on one. That gives you many lines in the same place. It started out as one layer but when the guy saw it he liked it so much that he wanted to go many layers no mater the cost, so what was I to do, I made more layers!

might have what you all need.

Is it possible to use the photo to make a wood carving. My co worker lost his best friend shortly ago, I would like to make him something to remember him by.Wondering If someone could help me with this or how to go about it.

I have tried cambam and artcam express just not getting something that i like for a toolpath.

I am sorry, I do not remember machine time. But it was many hours. I carved these with my old machine which had a max feed rate of 60"/min.
    The carvings are 6" X 6" I used a 1/16" ball nose with a 7% stepover to cut them.

I use a laptop, a few years old now. It took the preview about 1.5 mins. to show me this

If you click on the preview pane while its working on the preview, it will show the picture as far as it has calculated. Click again, and it keeps adding to what its done.

I cut the Vikings sign. The buddy I did it for plans to fill the milled areas with yellow. This is what it looked like fresh off the router. Again, thanks to all who help us newbies. Larry, it would look way better painted the way yours was, but my painting skills aren't so good....

I cheat when I paint a carving. Before carving I put a light coat of urethane on it and let it cure. I can be as messy as I want to be and just sand it when the paint dries. Finish with a coat over the top and Roberts your mother's brother.

I put a coat of urethane on it prior to cutting. I think if he uses a water based paint, any excess will just wipe right off. Thanks for the tip!
