To just view DXF files, Autodesk (the AutoCAD guys) has a free file viewer at Autodesk - Autodesk DWG - DWG TrueView Download. If you want to modify a DXF file, then, like sqatch said, you need a CAD program or a vector-based graphics program. Inkscape is an open source (i.e., free) graphics program that will work with DXF files. It also has the ability to trace "flat" graphics files like .jpg so you can create your own DXF files.

Jeffery, try this one. It was saved as R2010 using Draftsight. The first one I did was saved under R14. What are you attempting to use to open these files? Let me know if this works..

Does anyone know of a free dxf viewer which will quickly page though dxf files. I have irfanviewer set up to do thumbnails and solidworks e-drawing, AND jetcam (which is close to what I need.).

I want something to give to folks I give disks of files to to quickly page through them with and hopefully not even need an install.

davek, why don't you just make a collage of the files on the disk when you give them out. Then there are no worries about installing anything.

I have never organized my files very well. I just made up a disk of most of my DXF's. It has many duplicates and many not very good bits and pieces "that I might need someday". Anyway, it has over 1000 files.

Jetcam pages through it nice and quickly but won't read all files. It also does not fit them all to screen. Solidworks viewer has a nice preview function in the "open file" dialog box but it won't preview files made with pre-2008 (I think) software. Since many folks try to go with an AutoCAD 12 format to ensure compatibility this is most of them.

I would like a simple viewer which would just page through quickly to give to folks and also to use to flip through when I am looking for ideas for a project.

Try this FREE viewer and see if it meets your needs. I only use it once in awhile, so I'm not sure how good it is.

Try this one. Saved in Draftsight 2010 DXF.

I can convert this for you but it needs to be a higher resolution out of photoshop. To convert this to vector it should be at the minimum 1200 ppi. Save as a grayscale image and I'll convert it to vector and dxf.
