I have a Haas VF-3 40 taper, and I am looking to take the gearbox appart to see what is wrong with the gear shifter assembly. I have taken appart the solenoid valve to check for any obstructions, I have also removed and opened up the orifices, now it seems the problem lies in the gearbox shifter assembly. Has anyone ever taken this appart? If so, would you have any helpfull tips for me?

i have seen one open once. it has 2 gears and onther small inside the gearbox that drive the shaft that moves the encoder.

There are two main things that cause shifting issues.

1) The shift piston assembly clogged up.
2) The gears are worn into each other, preventing proper shifting.

Once you tear it down this far you will be able to move the gear assembly back and fourth between high and low gear. If it moves freely with the motor plate removed, but won't move with the motor plate installed then the gears are probably worn into each other. You might be able to stick your hand in there and feel a ridge on the leading edge of the lower gear (the one under the one you can see).

I found an air cylinder leaking a severe amount of air on our turret, and once we repaired that, it seemed to have enough air to shift the gears. no problems since.

If you put air to the shifter cylinder with an air hose with rubber tip does the cylinder move? You should see it move and trigger the limit switches. If not then you need a cylinder.
