    Turning brass

360 brass being turned with high speed steel insert. Positive rake and no chipbreaker. No fluid, not an option. Tried 300-1000 RPM .002-.008 depth manually and with .005-.015 feed. This thing keeps grabbing the work. The workpiece is 6 inch long 2" diameter hanging out from a 6 jaw chuck about 4" probably with <.005 TIR at the end. The lathe is too small to chuck the work closer but if the runout is the problem then I could try to turn between centers but then I'd have to drill this stuff. Any suggestions?

No rake on brass, no chip breaker, just flat top tool.

Cool Try using a negative rake on the tool bit.

Brass always grabs, even when drilling! So you have to stone/grind a neutral to negative rake on the cutting edge, then it scrapes a hole in the stock!

Try using a negative rake on the tool bit.

A Negative rake is when the cutting edge is angled above the cutting edge.
A Neutral rake is when the cutting edge is angled lefel with the cutting edge.
A Positive rake is when the cutting edge is angled below the cutting edge.

It's not what you take away, it's what you are left with that counts!
