Wow, I just found this thread and was blown away by the analysis. Good work David! Do you have any general conclusions from your tests? Did you ever try any cases with the z-rails on the z car? Cheers!

would love to see you do some numbers on a composite carbon sandwich.
I have built one with a 1200mm beam but have not done any bending tests on it yet
beam is 300 square and Y and Z plates have the side plates added with a 12 inch clearance so very similar to the config your playing with

Hello All - Did this machine get built? Did it achieve target stiffness? We are picking up the pieces here and want to carry it on. See maximus thread and "steel gantry router" thread Peter
I don't think there's any record of it here.
And unfortunately, David Malicky, who contributed greatly to this thread, passed away a few years ago.

(Note: The opinions expressed in this post are my own and are not necessarily those of CNCzone and its management)
Mine did get finished and has worked out well: https://www.cnczone.com/forums/diy-c...58176-cnc.html
I have made a number of wood projects on it including crib for my grand daughter, 3 dressers with 27 dovetailed drawers, many carving boards and more. Stiffness and accuracy are good. I have not yet gotten around to doing any metal with it though.
I am sorry to hear of Dave M. passing. He was very helpful and brought some science to offset the opinions.
